The 'S' litter puppies at 2 days old
Sunday 28th September |
|
|
What better way to start the page than with a wee video clip? Our web master came to visit at the weekend and has gone all 'teccie' on us! - she's decided that we'd embed a video stream as not everyone is lucky enough to have seen a litter of puppies at such a young age. They really are adorable so we thought we'd share this with you. As well as being able to see the pups, just listen to that lovely sound of contented babies feeding - just wonderful. No matter how many times I witness this scene, as a breeder I never tire of it and I'm so pleased with this litter. Am really looking forward to seeing how they all turn out.

| Depending on your internet connection the video stream might take a few moments to load, but I promise you, it's well worth the wait! x |

Here is a slide show of the photos that Thea took on Sunday during her visit.
For those of you who aren't familiar with Flickr, if you hover your mouse over a picture and move it down, it will bring up all the thumbnails at the bottom so you can click between pictures.
Similarly, if you hover over a picture and move your mouse to the top a control will appear enabling you to pause the slideshow, fast forward/rewind between images and change the time between photos.
Have fun!

Thought you might like to see where Kiri and her puppies (plus me) are spending the first few important weeks. I have always used a separate room for the whelping, as it's more benificial for the mother of the pups, to have complete peace of mind, during this time. Our other dogs are not allowed into this room, whilst Kiri is with her puppies. They have, however, had a "sneak preview" when she was out in the garden :-) This is the smallest bedroom in our 4 bedroom home and it fits the bill nicely as a nursery. Here, Kiri spends her day, caring for the puppies and all her meals are brought to her. She can, of course, join the other dogs if she wants to, but, in these early days, it's hard enough to get her to go out for a toilet break - let alone socialise with Klara, Molsen and Elke! Time enough for that when the puppies are a little older. The 'Popcorn' bucket, by the whelping box, contains fresh water for her to drink. A milky dish of tea is a favourite, as is drinking yoghurt. Kiri needs lots of liquid to keep the 'milk bar' going:-) |

The puppies are now 5 days old and have little fat tummies. At their weighing this morning, they had gained between 5 and 6 ozs each, since birth. All 8 are gaining well and are so contented. Last night, both Kiri and I were able to sleep through, without hearing a single puppy sqeaking or anxious. That's how we like it !! |

The first milestone is reached; the puppies are one week old today. Daily weight gains and becoming more mobile, are now an established pattern in their little lives. They still sleep and suckle all the time, so 'Kiri' has to make at least 20 fluid ozs a day to keep them growing and developing as they should. Yesterday, I took her for a lovely walk in the field near our home. It was late afternoon and the sun was actually shining! This was the first time 'Kiri' had left her puppies for any length of time, since they were born. |

Here's a new photo of the pups at 8 days old. They really are little fat cuties ! My son Jeremy came for a visit, this weekend (he's a profesional photographer) so many photos were taken of our dogs plus a video clip of the puppies, which I hope Thea can include when she comes back from a weeks holiday in Menorca :-)
Meanwhile, you'll have to put up with news and basic digital shots, of the growing pups!! |

Wednesday October 8th
At 12 days old, the puppies eyes are starting to open. This is the time to keep the curtains drawn, so they get used to natural light very gradually, over the next few days. Puppies are born with an immature brain and nervous system, and with their eyes and ears tightly closed. The puppies eyes should be fully open by this weekend. The ear canals open fully a week later. By the time they're 5 weeks old, they can see and hear as well as an adult dog. When they sleep, the pups are seldom still, they twitch and jerk and stretch their little limbs. This reflex action is called "activated sleep", and serves to develop and exercise the nerve and muscle system. The pups also wobble about on shaky legs, within the whelping box for a few minutes, whilst awake (this isn't very often) :-)
The weight difference between the pups is only 2 ozs. That is, 3 pups weigh 2oz more than the other 5, so they are all very even in development. Right now, I spend too much time cooing over them all - they are terrible time wasters!! |

| Saturday 11th October |
At 15 days old, the puppies eyes are open! That is, when they're awake, which isn't very often. Feeding and sleeping is still the rule, although they have been out of the whelping box, for a 'first walk'. They also respond to me handling them and are now more aware of their mother, when she is near. They raise their little heads, 'scent' the air and start to get very excited, moving about the box and generally making a noise! When she gets to them it's a 'free for all' and I must then try to sort out, who goes where along the 'milk bar'. The little bitch (who I am keeping) has gained 7ozs in 48hours and is now as heavy as 2 of her brothers:-)

It really is amazing how fast the puppies are growing!! In just 48 hours since my last posting, they're now coming out of the box regularly, to explore their environment. It's now time to put the 'step' in place, to help get in and out of the box. They also use this time to go to toilet and are now using the newspaper put down for this purpose. At 17 days old, they're starting to play and interact with each other. The games are all 'mouthing ' games, that help the pups to discover more about their siblings. The stronger they get, the rougher their games become!! |

Today's another milestone in the puppies lives. Aged 19 days, they have started the weaning process and had a homemade ground rice pudding for their lunch :-) Naturally, they made the most terrible mess, attempting to stand at the edge of the plate, without wobbling and lap up the pudding. After they had eaten enough, 'Kiri' was in heaven - as she was able to finish up what the pups had left! Not content with their first 'solid' meal, the pups then had a feed from their mother, all piling in while she sat there:-) |

| Friday October 24th - 4 weeks old |
The puppies are now in their new location. Last Tuesday they moved from the 'Nursery' to the utility room downstairs, which is located off our big kitchen. Here they will become more used to the everyday 'hustle and bustle'of the home and hear the everyday noises associated with any normal household. It's also an oportunity to get them used to being in the crate - although I have removed the door, so they can come and go as they wish. The puppies have another bed as well, this is actually meant for 'Kiri' to lie in, when she wishes to be away from her babies. The problem is, where she goes, the pups want to be as well!! Last night was the first time 'Kiri' decided to leave her pups alone for the whole night. As they are now on 4 meals a day, prepared by me, she can take a well earned break now and then:-) Here the pups are having lunch and playing in their crate. |

| Tuesday October 28th |
This is 'half term' week and we have our 6 year old grand-daughter Scarlett staying with us, for a few days. It's a good oportunity for the puppies to be played with (under supervision) by a young child. Scarlett knows all the 'pet' names for the pups and they love all the extra attention and cuddles they're getting from her. By the week-end, when they are 5 weeks old, the puppies will be going outside every day for a few hours, to play in the puppy pen and puppy house, we have for this purpose. It's important for them to know what the 'big wide world' is all about :-) |

| Tuesday November 4th - "Happy 1st Birthday to Millie" Thea's baby girl reaches her first milestone in life! |
A whole week has gone by without an update on the puppies! We had so many visitors during half term and I'm still under-par with this wretched cold, which I cannot shake off! Anyway, today the pups were outside for a few hours, as it was actually dry and sunny, although the photo's don't show that the weather was quite good. We have so many trees around our house, that it's a full time job to keep the leaves cleared regularly. The pups took this new experience in their stride and had Kiri with them to show the way. Later in the afternoon, they had their first car ride, altogether in the car crate, to the vets for weighing, worming (again) and health checks. Lucky the motorist behind me, as I drove carefully and sedately (not my usual mode) at 30mph all the way!! Not one of the pups was car sick - but there were quite a few 'tiddles' on the vetbed in the back of the car! All the pups have a clean bill of health and all had 1 worming tablet - except for Ambrose - he weighs a kilo more than the other boys, so he had an extra half tablet!! I had to count the pups on leaving the vets, as they were in real danger of being 'kidnapped' by the nurses on duty :-) |

| Saturday November 8th |
| A dull November morning, but the puppies are out in their playpen in the dog compound. At 6 weeks of age, they now spend about 5 hours outside each day. They are happy with the 'activity centre' toys, - much loved by all our growing puppies and find lots to keep them amused. They have a familiar bed to go into, when they want to sleep, with a heating lamp above to keep them warm. Look how much space they take up in the whelping box now! There's no room for Kiri ,if she wants to join them, (which isn't very often, as they have such strong teeth and nails)! Whilst the pups are outside, it gives me the chance to clean the Utility room and change their bedding - a task that has to be done daily. The bigger the pups grow, the more they eat - and the more they eat, the more they need cleaning up! |

| Friday 14th November - The puppies are 7 weeks old today ! |
This will be the last posting for the 'S' litter as tomorrow the first puppy will leave for his new home. It is a sad time for me - but also a happy one, as I know all the puppies will be loved and cared for by their new families. All they have known so far, in their 7 weeks of life, is warmth, food, companionship and care. I have given them the best start and hope with all my heart, that it will continue throughout their lives. In order of leaving here, they are; Sarchie in Exeter, Devon - Oskar in Milton Keynes - Rodney Ambrose in Farnborough, Hants. - Nelson in Debenham, Suffolk - Flint in Klosters, Switzerland - (such a long drive and he only went to the toilet twice on the journey!) Kasper in Gayton, Norfolk and Sam in Druzec, Czech Republic. The following photo's are the last ones taken of the pups playing together. Have a wonderful life pups :-) love from Eve x |
